Subject: [VINUX-SUPPORT] Notes on using USB Braille display with virtual machine
Mo,

As you requested, here are a few lines about using Braille with the VMWare
Player.

Here are some hints for using a USB Braille display with Windows and a
virtual machine inside the VMWare Player.

First, note that the Braille display can only be "connected" to and function
with only one machine at a time. Thus, if the Braille display is "connected
to and working in the Windows session, then it will not be "connected" to or
working in the virtual machine within the VMWare Player and vice versa.

If you want to have the Braille display function in the virtual machine,
follow these steps:

1. Start the VMWare Player and select the virtual machine you want to
run.

2. Hit Alt+L to "Play" the virtual machine.

3. Once the virtual machine is running, hit Alt+V within the VMWare
Player to bring up the "Virtual Machine Settings" menu.

4. Arrow down to "Removable Devices" and hit the right arrow to open
up this item.

5. Arrow down to the Braille display connected to your computer. For
example, if you are using the Pacmate Braille display from Freedom
Scientific, look for "Freedom Scientific PM display".

6. Hit the right arrow to open this item

7. Arrow down once to the item "Connect (Disconnect from host)" and
hit "enter".

8. A dialog will come up asking if it is okay to disconnect the USB
Braille device from the host computer so that it can be connected to the
virtual machine.

9. If you would like to use the Braille display with the virtual
machine, choose "OK" and the Braille display should now be able to function
in the virtual machine.

10. Hit control+G to use the virtual machine.

11. Note: If you switch back to the Windows session with control+Alt or
control+shift+alt you will notice that the Braille display does not function
inside Windows.

12. To reconnect the Braille display to the Windows session, get into the
VMWare Player again in the Windows OS, and navigate the "Virtual Machine
Settings" menu again (Alt+V) until you find the Braille display and the
"disconnect (reconnect to host)" item.

13. Hit enter to disconnect the Braille display from the host and
reconnect it to the Windows session.

14. If you are using JAWS, you will probably have to kill and restart JAWS
again in order to have JAWS recognize that the Braille display is connected
again in the Windows session.

I hope this helps. It is a bit of a nuisance to switch back and forth
between Windows and the virtual machine because not only do you have to keep
going back and forth to the dialog in the VMWare Virtual Machine Settings to
connect and disconnect the Braille display, but you also have to kill the
screen reader in Windows in order for the screen reader to recognize that
the Braille display is connected again.

It sure would be nice if the VMWare folks could fix this. As I said in an
earlier note, sighted folks don't have to keep connecting and disconnecting
their screen / display - why should we?
